Grant Management

Successful research programs require more than strong scientific ideas. Investigators must also understand how grants are administered, how research budgets are managed, and how projects are conducted within institutional and federal requirements. The Grant Management component of the Oklahoma Geroscience Training Program introduces trainees to the operational side of research and prepares them for the responsibilities of independent investigators.

Through workshops, discussions, and mentoring, trainees gain exposure to the life cycle of a research award—from proposal development and submission through project implementation, reporting, and closeout. Participants learn how funding mechanisms support scientific research and how investigators manage resources to achieve project goals.

Training topics may include budget development, effort allocation, regulatory compliance, reporting requirements, project planning, subcontract management, and interactions with institutional research administration offices. Trainees also gain a greater understanding of the responsibilities associated with managing federally funded research and maintaining compliance with sponsor expectations.

For many trainees, these concepts are encountered for the first time during their training. Early exposure helps demystify the administrative aspects of research and provides valuable context for future grant applications and leadership roles.

By developing an understanding of grant management alongside scientific and professional skills, trainees are better prepared to navigate the realities of leading a research program and sustaining a successful, funded career in science.
