Mentor Training

Effective mentorship is a skill that requires continuous learning, reflection, and improvement. The Oklahoma Geroscience Training Program is committed not only to developing outstanding trainees, but also to supporting mentors in providing high-quality guidance and fostering positive training experiences.

All participating mentors engage in formal mentor development activities designed to strengthen communication, promote effective mentoring practices, and support trainee success. These efforts help ensure consistency across mentoring relationships while reinforcing the program's commitment to creating a productive and supportive training environment.

Mentor training emphasizes evidence-based approaches to mentoring, including strategies for setting expectations, providing constructive feedback, fostering professional growth, supporting diverse career goals, and promoting trainee well-being. These activities also create opportunities for mentors to share experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from one another.

The program incorporates nationally recognized mentor-development frameworks, including training aligned with the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER). These approaches help mentors build the skills needed to support trainees from diverse backgrounds and career aspirations while maintaining high standards of scientific rigor and professional development.

Mentorship effectiveness is regularly evaluated through trainee feedback, program reviews, and ongoing assessment processes. By investing in mentor development alongside trainee development, the program strengthens the quality of the training environment and reinforces its commitment to preparing the next generation of leaders in aging research.
